Description
1811 Capped Bust Left Half Eagle, MS62
Scarce Small 5, BD-2 Example
1811 $5 Small 5 MS62 PCGS. Breen-6464, BD-2, R.3. Half
eagles were struck in large numbers in 1811, with a reported
mintage of 99,581 pieces. The dies were fairly robust, and only two
varieties are known for the date. This coin represents the slightly
more available BD-2 variety, with the small 5 in the denomination.
This numeral punch had been used on different dies in 1810. The
BD-2 die marriage probably accounts for 35,000-50,000 pieces of the
original mintage, and John Dannreuther estimates a surviving
population of 225-300 examples today in all grades. The present coin is an attractive MS62 specimen, with well detailed devices and bright mint luster. The surfaces are a pleasing greenish-gold color, with accents of turquoise and rose color. Population: 30 in 62, 53 finer (9/10).(Registry values: P2)
Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25PH, PCGS# 8109, Greysheet# 8815)
Weight: 8.75 grams
Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
