Description
1811 BD-1 Tall 5 Half Eagle, MS62
Early Die State
1811 $5 Tall 5, BD-1, High R.3, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther
Die State b/d. Faint obverse clash marks are evident below
Liberty's ear with the reverse die showing evidence of die lapping.
The two 1811 die marriages are plentiful across a range of grades
from XF45 to MS64 with few in lower or higher grades. NGC reports
an average grade of AU58. The two 1811 die marriages, both from a
single obverse die, are similar in availability with the Tall 5
slightly scarcer than the Small 5 variety, and neither variety is
scarce in the realm of early half eagles. The Heritage Permanent
Auction Archives show a 60/40 relationship favoring the more
plentiful Small 5 die marriage. Census for both varieties: 37 in
62, 43 finer (11/25).Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# BFXS, Variety PCGS# 507600, Base PCGS# 8110, Greysheet# 315462)
