    1811 Half Eagle, MS62
    Luminous Tall 5, BD-1 Example

1811 $5 Tall 5, BD-1, High R.3, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/d. The reported mintage for the 1811 half eagle stands at 99,581 coins. A single obverse die was used, while two reverses are distinguished by the 5 in the denomination. Tall 5 representatives, as here, are marginally more difficult to locate than their Small 5 counterparts. This example shows faint shield clash marks under Liberty's ear, indicative of a middle die state. Most 1811 half eagles survive in relatively high grades, XF to AU. Fewer than 100 Uncirculated pieces are believed extant, however.

Greenish accents complement wheat-gold color. The eye appeal is enhanced by luminous mint frost that radiates over each side. The impression in unequivocally bold with minor softness near the border adjacent to stars 1 to 3, the corresponding area on the reverse, and the scroll above the eagle. Small flecks and luster grazes are in line with the grade. Census: 5 in 62, 8 finer (10/16).
