Description

1811 BD-1 Tall 5 Half Eagle, MS64 CAC
Just 7 at PCGS and 4 Finer

1811 $5 Tall 5, BD-1, High R.3, MS64 PCGS. CAC. Orange-gold tinted surfaces contain pops of red-gold in select protected areas. Strike is exquisite, with no perceptible areas of weakness. The fields are similarly stunning, with no notable abrasions to be found. The 1811 half eagle consists of two die marriages, which share an obverse. The BD-1 uses the reverse die from 1810 BD-1, and can easily be differentiated by the Tall 5 in the denomination, where the BD-2 uses a unique reverse that has a much smaller 5 in the denomination. The present BD-1 is slightly scarcer. Among this Tall 5 type, few equal the exquisite preservation of the present offering, with just 7 in 64 and 2 finer (2/26). The CAC population is even smaller, with only 4 in 64 and 1 finer (2/26), placing this piece at the pinnacle of the surviving examples of this issue.
