    1811 Half Eagle, BD-1, MS64
    Dazzling Luster, Original Surfaces

1811 $5 Tall 5, BD-1, High R.3, MS64 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/d, lightly clashed. In Mint State, BD-1 is by far the scarcer of the two 1811 half eagle varieties. However, in Gem condition, both are rare and prohibitively so finer. In the absolute sense, BD-1 is fairly plentiful for an early half eagle with perhaps 175 to 250 coins known, per John Dannreuther. But the population thins considerably in Mint State, and pieces with original surfaces are downright rare at this level.

This Choice representative glows with frosty, original luster in warm honey and peach-gold hues. When viewed beneath a loupe, the eye appeal is even more impressive. The strike is even and well-executed, producing complete dentils around each side, with only trivial weakness on the eagle's left (facing) wing. A few minor grazes preclude full Gem status but hardly hinder the eye appeal. A finer Capped Bust Left type coin would be extremely difficult to locate. Population (Tall 5): 6 in 64, 3 finer (1/16).
