Description

    Mint State 1811 Half Eagle
    Tall 5, BD-1 Variety

1811 $5 Tall 5 MS61 NGC. Breen-6463, BD-1, High R.3. A substantial mintage of 99,581 half eagles was accomplished in 1811, with two die varieties known for the date. The coin offered here represents the BD-1 variety, characterized by the Tall 5 in the denomination. Experts believe 175-250 examples of the BD-1 survive today in all grades.
The present coin is a sharply detailed MS61 example, with the slightest touch of softness on the eagle's left wing and talons. The light greenish-gold surfaces retain much original mint luster and show few signs of contact. A few clash marks are evident on the reverse, between the wing and eagle's beak. Eye appeal is outstanding. Census: 0 in 61, 0 finer (8/11).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# BFXS, PCGS# 8110)

    Weight: 8.75 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
