1812 Capped Bust Left Half Eagle
BD-1 Variety, AU58
1812 $5 AU58 NGC. Breen-6466, BD-1, R.3. The 1812 Capped
Bust Left half eagle enjoyed a large mintage of 58,087 pieces, with
two die varieties for the date. The present coin represents the
more available BD-1 variety, with the Wide 5 D in the denomination.
Perhaps 300-450 examples of the BD-1 variety survive today in all
grades. The lustrous surfaces of this specimen are a light
greenish-gold, with rose highlights. The devices are sharply
detailed and show only slight traces of wear. A few planchet
depressions (as struck) in the obverse field and on Liberty's cheek
