    Description

    1812 Five Dollar, Near-Mint
    Better BD-2 Narrow 5D

1812 $5 AU58 PCGS. BD-2, High R.4. Bass-Dannreuther Die State c/b, clashed near the base of the shield. Most 1812 half eagles are the "common" Wide 5D BD-1. The BD-2 is very scarce to rare and is readily identified by the close spacing between the 5D of the denomination. The present piece has nearly full detail but shows slight wear on Liberty's curls, drapery, and eyebrow, as well as the eagle's claws. Sun-gold luster fills the borders and motifs. Refreshingly free from abrasions, which makes the eye appeal better than some examples certified as MS60 or MS61.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PL, PCGS# 8112)
