    Description

1812 Capped Bust Left Half Eagle, MS63
    Popular Wide 5D, BD-1 Variety

1812 $5 MS63 NGC. BD-1, R.3. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. Only one obverse and two reverse dies were used to coin the reported mintage of 58,087 Capped Bust Left half eagles in 1812, resulting in just two known die varieties for the date. This coin represents the more available BD-1 variety, easily recognized by the Wide 5D in the denomination. Probably 300-450 examples of the BD-1 variety have survived in all grades, and Mint State specimens are rare. The obverse die was also used to strike the BD-2 variety of this date and this was the only use of the reverse die.

The present coin is a delightful Select specimen with well-detailed design elements and vibrant mint luster. Close inspection reveals a few minor adjustment marks on the eagle's neck and the dies seem to have been lapped, resulting in a touch of softness on the reverse. Only minor signs of contact are evident and eye appeal is quite strong. Census: 27 in 63, 34 finer (4/13).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 42AM, PCGS# 8112)

    Weight: 8.75 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
