Description

Well Struck 1812 Half Eagle, BD-1, MS63

1812 $5 MS63 NGC. Wide 5D, Breen-6466, BD-1, R.3. The two 1812 half eagle varieties for the year use a common obverse, but the reverses differ in the distance between the 5 and the D. On this variety, the D is wholly under the branch, whereas BD-2 has the D mostly under the feather.
The yellow-gold lustrous surfaces of this Select example are tinted with subtle greenish-tan and the design elements are well impressed. A few minor ticks scattered about limit the grade. Two curious die lines mentioned in John Dannreuther and Harry Bass, Jr. (2006) are visible on the reverse. One runs from the rim at 2:00 left past the first A in AMERICA and ends in the wing, and the other curves through the horizontal shield lines and ends in the left (facing) wing.(Registry values: P2)
