    Description

    Sharp 1812 Five Dollar, Wide 5D, BD-1, MS64

1812 $5 MS64 NGC. Wide 5D, Breen-6466, BD-1, R.3. The lowest tip of the fletchings is centered over the right end of the flag in the 5. John Dannreuther says it well: "This is the first of two uses for this obverse die and the only use of this reverse, which has the 5 and D strangely separated, as the D is about centered between the 5 and the last A of AMERICA." The obverse is shared, of course, with the 1812 Close 5D, BD-2, a rarer variety. Having said that, the 1812 Wide 5D is among the most "commonly" encountered issues in this difficult series, and thus makes a superlative type coin.
This charming near-Gem is sharply struck, both in the centers and at the margins. Both sides display dazzling, superb mint luster, with just a few shallow grazes that keep the coin from an even higher grade. The yellow-gold surfaces have just a hint of greenish patina.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 42AM, PCGS# 8112)

    Weight: 8.75 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
