    Description

Impressive Choice Mint State 1812 Half Eagle

1812 $5 MS64 PCGS. Wide 5D, Breen-6466, BD-1, R.3. 1812 is the final date of the Capped Bust Left type, which had been struck since 1807. All six dates of the type are collectible, unlike the other early half eagle types, which each have one or more stoppers. A complete Guide Book collection of Capped Bust Left fives is a major task, however, since the two 1810 Small Five varieties are very rare. The 1812 has two die marriages, and both are available by the difficult standards of early gold. The Wide 5D variety is less scarce than the Narrow 5D, although both can be acquired with patience.
This is an impressive Choice Mint State 1812 five with a remarkably smooth obverse. The prominent curved die scratch within the eagle's left (facing) wing and shield is mint-made, and is present on every survivor known from this die marriage. Also of mint origin are the few moderate adjustment marks found on Liberty's cheek and on her neck curls. These adjustment marks are faintly visible on the bust truncation and on the left-side denticles. The actual grade is limited only by a small nick on the reverse scroll near the S in PLURIBUS, and a concealed tick on the top of the eagle's neck. The strike is precise, with all details sharp aside from minor blending of detail on the central vertical shield stripes. The apricot-gold toning is original, and dominates the reverse as well as the obverse margin. The obverse center has aqua tints. Luster fully sweeps both sides, and the eye appeal is impressive for the challenging Capped Bust Left type. Encapsulated in a green label PCGS holder. Population: 38 in 64, 5 finer (2/07).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 42AM, PCGS# 8112)

    Weight: 8.75 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
