Description

1812 Half Eagle, BD-1, MS62
Exceptional Type Coin

1812 $5 Wide 5D, BD-1, R.3, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. Capped Bust half eagles are overall elusive, as historically they were more valuable for their melt value than their face value. Dannreuther estimates that between 300 to 400 pieces are known for the 1812 BD-1 of the original 58,087 distribution of the date. The variety is among the more available of the half eagles making it an exceptional type coin.

Deep tawny-gold luster envelops this piece with some deepening patina developing within the fields. The piece is overall well-struck with light marks that are negligible for the appeal. A few adjustment marks (as struck) run across Liberty's cheek. Beyond MS62 the issue becomes scarcer with just 66 coins at or exceeding Choice Uncirculated at NGC (3/26).
