Description
1812 BD-1 Half Eagle, MS62
Lustrous Wide 5D Example
1812 $5 Wide 5D, BD-1, R.3, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die
State a/a. There are no clash marks, die cracks, or lapping on
either side, although the reverse has prominent curved die lines in
the shield and left wing, as usual for BD-1. This is a later strike
from this die state, as the die line from the right wing to the
border (nearly touching the first A in AMERICA) has faded and is no
longer visible. The BD-1, with the widely spaced denominator, is
the most common 1812 half eagle variety and suitable for date
collectors. This MS62 is an ideal type candidate as well, as it is the final-year of the Capped Bust Left design which was only produced for six years beginning in 1807. This attractive half eagle has strong design definition, frosty yellow-gold luster, and splashes of apricot within the legends and recesses. Scattered marks are light with none of significance, and a tiny smudge of die grease around star 2 serves as a pedigree marker.
