    Description

    1813 Half Eagle, BD-2, MS62
    Sharp and Appealing

1813 $5 BD-2, R.4, MS62 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/b, both dies cracked. BD-2 is the scarcer of the two 1813 half eagle varieties, surviving with likely fewer than 200 pieces in all grades. This is the second and final use of the obverse, although the tail die was again employed in 1814 and 1815. This Mint State example is impressively sharp throughout the portrait, eagle, and peripheral stars, evidencing a bold and even strike. Satiny yellow-gold luster shows light field chatter that limits the grade but is free of severe abrasions. The aesthetics of this piece generate strong type coin appeal. Finer examples of the BD-2 die pairing are scarce. (NGC ID# 25PM, Variety PCGS# 45648, Base PCGS# 8116)
