    Description

1813 Half Eagle, BD-1, AU Details
    First-Year Type Representative

1813 $5 -- Improperly Cleaned -- NCS. AU Details. BD-1, R.2. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. The half eagle design was modified in 1813 to a shortened, reworked bust; examples of the second type were more heavily melted for their gold content those of the previous type, and are generally rarer in all grades. BD-1 is perhaps the only exception. Not only is this variety the most available of the two varieties for this issue, it is also the most easily obtainable variety for the modified Capped Bust type, as 450 to 650 survivors are believed known in all grades. As such, it is ideal for collectors seeking a single type representative.

This piece exhibits strong detail, with only slight wear over the high points. NCS notes signs of old cleaning, though the coin has since acquired pleasing green-gold patina with faint orange-gold overtones. A pleasing example of this sought-after type.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25PM, PCGS# 8116)

    Weight: 8.75 grams

    Metal: 91.67% Gold, 8.33% Copper
