    Description

Desirable 1813 MS 63 Capped Head Half Eagle

1813 $5 MS 63 NGC. Unlisted in Breen, Miller-120, R.7. A scarce variety that shares the obverse die of the more commonly seen B. 1-A, but is paired with a reverse that differs in the placement of the word STATES in relation to the eagle's left wingtip and the word OF. The position of the middle arrowhead relative to the I in AMERICA, and the placement of the D in relation to the 5 in the denomination are also different. All the devices are boldly struck, even the peripheral stars on the obverse, and both sides are accented with lovely reddish patina. There are no overly distracting marks, only a moderate number of lighter, scuffy abrasions in the fields. Population: 31 in 63, 21 finer. (NGC ID# 25PM, PCGS# 8116)

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
