Description

1818 BD-1 Half Eagle, AU58
Beautiful Orange-Gold Highlights

1818 $5 BD-1, R.5, AU58 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State II, the usual state. White-gold surfaces are illuminated from the periphery with blazing orange-gold highlights. Surfaces gleam with significant Mint luster. Abrasions are microscopic, with only a few small nicks on the lower bust worthy of note. All but the uppermost hair curls are fully impressed into the planchet.

Three die marriages exist for 1818 half eagles, all of which lie in the R.4 to R.5 range. Each also represents a different type. The BD-3 is the I Over 0 or 5D Over 50 variety, so named because the D in the denomination was formed by punching a 0 for the loop and an I for the upright. The BD-2 represents the STATESOF variety, as these two words lack sufficient space to separate them. This is similar to the STATESOFAMERICA dimes of 1814 and 1820, but less intense due to more limited crowding and the involvement of only two words instead of three. Finally, the present BD-1 represents the base type. This offering represents a beautiful example from a scarce type.
