    1818 BD-1 Half Eagle, MS60
    CAC-Approved Original Surfaces

1818 $5 BD-1, R.5, MS60 NGC. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b, with a cracked reverse. Mint Engraver John Reich left the Mint in 1817, and Robert Scot is credited with making slight alterations to the Capped Bust design in 1818. The area under the cap is slightly different, but side-by-side comparison with the 1815 is required for a full appreciation of these subtle differences. Scot also used Reich's notched Star 13 punch for all obverse stars in 1818, confirming the maker of these dies. BD-1 has an estimated survival rate of 50 to 65 coins, few of which remain Uncirculated. This is a gorgeous, original Mint State example with lustrous, green-gold surfaces. Well-centered with bold dentils. Strike detail is trivially soft on the portrait, but the eagle is crisply defined. Encapsulated in a former generation holder with CAC endorsement.
