Rare BD-1 Variety

1818 $5 BD-1, R.5, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. A mintage of 48,588 half eagles were delivered during 1818. John Dannreuther estimates just 50-65 coins known for the BD-1 variety. Chief Engraver Robert Scot was again responsible for all engraving duties after the resignation of Assistant Engraver John Reich due to worsening eyesight on March 31, 1817.

Bright luster highlights this attractive yellow-gold half eagle. Scattered light marks are consistent with the grade of this lovely piece. The strike is strong and full, with all details proudly displayed. A good opportunity to acquire this scarce date with a nice Uncirculated example.
