Description

1818 BD-1 Half Eagle, AU Details
Only 50 to 65 Coins Extant

1818 $5 BD-1, R.5 -- Repaired -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b with a die crack that travels through the base of AMERICA to the D in the denomination. BD-1 is one of three die pairs for the 1818 half eagle, distinguished by the placement of the final S in STATES directly over the S in PLURIBUS below. John Dannreuther estimates 10,000 to 15,000 examples were originally minted, of which perhaps 50 to 65 pieces are known -- an astonishingly low rate of survival that makes the variety scarce in all grades. This representative shows an area of repair in the right obverse field behind the portrait. Subdued wheat-gold surfaces exhibit reddish accents around the borders. Good detail with minimal circulation wear.
