1818 Half Eagle, BD-1, Unc Details
    Brightly Lustrous

1818 $5 BD-1, R.5 -- Reverse Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b. BD-1 is known as the "Normal Dies" for the 1818 half eagle; BD-2 shows STATES OF so closely spaced so as to appear as one word, and BD-3 has a blundered denomination. BD-1 is also scarce, as 50 to 65 pieces are believed known. This example displays Uncirculated detail but is a trifle soft on the central hair curls and corresponding portion of the reverse shield and eagle. Bright, yellow-gold luster illuminates each side, although faint lines on the reverse, most noticeable above the eagle's head, prevent a numeric grade.
