    1818 BD-1 Half Eagle, MS62
    13 'Notched Point' Stars

1818 $5 MS62 PCGS. BD-1, R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b with two lengthy reverse cracks through AMERICA and the eagle's neck. Three different marriages of 1818 half eagles are known, and each merits a separate Guide Book listing. BD-3 is the 5D over 50 engraver's blunder, BD-2 is the STATESOF layout error, and BD-1 is the "normal" variety. Each is very scarce to rare, although BD-2 shows up more often than either BD-1 or BD-3. BD-1 is distinctive for its die cracks, a clearly repunched E in UNITED, and the inadvertent use of John Reich's "notched point" star punch for all 13 stars. The present example has pleasing butter-gold color. No marks merit singular mention, although clusters of wispy contact are noted near star 11 and the branch stem. Liberty's cheekbone and the left shield border display moderate incompleteness of strike, but the remainder of the design is bold.(Registry values: P3)
