Description
1818 BD-3 Half Eagle, Unc Details
Former 5D Over 50 Variety, Now I Over 0
1818 $5 Repunched Denomination (I Over 0), BD-3, R.5 -- Obverse
Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. Unc. Bass-Dannreuther Die
State b/b. Faint die clashing appears on each side. The 1818 BD-3
half eagle has traditionally been referred to as the 5D over 50
variety, but a recent discovery by Heritage Cataloger John Sculley
shows that even long-held beliefs and widely accepted theories are
still subject to change, especially in the world of numismatics. In
reality, Mint officials used an "I" punch over the initial 0,
creating what appears to be a "D." Variety BD-3 is rare in the
absolute sense with only 35 to 45 pieces known. It is very rare in
mint condition. This piece is clearly uncirculated, although
someone in the past lightly wiped the obverse. Both sides are
yellow-gold with a pinpoint impression. A hint of semiprooflike
reflectivity is apparent in the fields, adding to the captivating
eye appeal.
