1818 Half Eagle, Rarely Seen MS62
    BD-2, STATESOF Reverse

1818 $5 STATESOF, BD-2, R.4, MS62 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b, a rarely seen early die state without the bisecting obverse crack. BD-2 employs this obverse and reverse in their only use. A later die state shows the obverse terminally cracked, although such a failure is not documented for the tail die. BD-2 is the most plentiful of three 1818 half eagle varieties, although it is not common in the absolute sense; fewer than 125 survivors are believed known. This Uncirculated coin is conditionally rare not only for the variety but also for the date as a whole. The strike is even and well-centered, showing trivial weakness only on the left-side vertical shield stripes. Frosty yellow-gold luster illuminates the fields, while light, scattered handling marks define the grade without posing significant distraction. Census: 9 in 62, 10 finer (12/16).
