Description
1818 BD-2 Half Eagle, MS63
STATESOF Reverse
1818 $5 STATESOF, BD-2, R.4, MS63 PCGS. HBJ-251. This
lovely Choice Mint State half eagle is brilliant and highly
lustrous with coppery-orange toning over frosty yellow-gold
luster.Variety Equivalents: Adams-3, Breen 2-B, Miller-124, Bass-3130.
Obverse Die: The obverse die is unique to this marriage.
Reverse Die: The reverse die is unique to this marriage.
Bass-Dannreuther Die State c: In addition to faint clash marks, the obverse has a heavy bisecting die crack from the border through star 6 and the bust, emerging at the lowest curl and dividing the second 8 of the date.
PCGS Population Data (10/25): PCGS has certified three MS63 submissions, two more graded MS63+, and seven finer examples.
Breen (1966): Breen correctly observed: "Least rare of the 1818's, but a most distinctive type." He went on to cite "Judd 72" as a known example. In this case, he was not referring to a pattern variety, rather an item number in Abe Kosoff's 1962 Illustrated History of United States Coinage that cataloged the Dr. J. Hewitt Judd Collection.
Bass-Dannreuther (2006): "This is the only die found with STATES ending so far to the right (the last S is over the U of UNUM) and Scot may have overcompensated for this blunder by placing STATES and OF extremely far apart for the next reverse, used for BD-3."
Heritage Commentary: The three 1818 varieties are BD-1 that has a normal denomination and properly spaced legend, BD-2 offered here with the words STATES and OF crowded together, and BD-3 that is traditionally called the 5D over 50 variety. Recently, Heritage cataloger David Stone made a discovery regarding the BD-3, that correcting the blundered reverse die was not accomplished by punching a D over the 0 but rather punching an I in the appropriate spot to correct the denomination.
Doug Winter Commentary: 1818 is among the most interesting years of this design type with no less than three major varieties; the Normal reverse, the STATESOF reverse and the 5D/50 Reverse.
Provenance: Stack's Bowers (4/2022), lot 3140.
