Description
1824 Capped Head Left Five, Unc Details
BD-1, Only Variety of the Date
1824 $5 -- Obverse Damage -- NGC Details. Unc. BD-1, High
R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/b. The 1824 half eagle boasts
a low mintage of 17,340 pieces, with a single die variety known for
the date. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse
had been used to strike five different varieties in previous years,
beginning in 1820. Probably no more than 30-40 examples survive in
all grades and conditions. The present coin shows some surface roughness on Liberty's cheek and a few thin scratches in the obverse fields. The design elements are sharply detailed and the antique-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster. A still-attractive specimen for the early gold collector.
Note for clients in the European Union: This lot is considered by the European Union to be “investment gold”. We believe that it meets the criteria established in Article 344(1), point (2) of Council Directive 2006/112/EC and thus should be exempt from import VAT regardless of the selling price. Any questions or concerns about VAT should be addressed to your accountant or local tax authority.
