1826 Capped Head Five, AU Sharpness
    Rare Early Date, Seldom Offered

1826 $5 BD-1, Large Letters, R.5 -- Cleaning -- PCGS Genuine. AU Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/e. With only two varieties known, the 1826 five is either rare or extremely rare. The present BD-1 Large Letters die pair is rare, with just 30 to 40 known survivors. The Small Letters BD-2 die marriage is a great rarity, with only three pieces known, one of which is permanently held at the National Numismatic Collection in the Smithsonian Institution. An overly large period after 5D helps identify the BD-1 variety; in comparison, the BD-2 period after 5D is just a tiny dot. This example has an unmistakably large period. Sharply struck from fresh dies, the coin was lightly cleaned at some point, with little or no discernible wear. Brilliant, medium-gold surfaces are lightly hairlined. This is just the second 1826 half eagle we have offered in the past five years of any variety or grade.
