Elusive 1826 MS 61 Capped Bust Half Eagle

1826 MS 61 PCGS. One of numerous rare issues in the heavily melted Capped Bust Left series of half eagles, unquestionably the most challenging series in all of U.S. numismatics. Akers wrote of the 1826 that "most known examples are uncirculated, many of them gems," but our experience and Population data would disagree with the second part of that statement. This specimen is mildly prooflike with striking details that are fully executed save for a few locks of hair and the eagle's talons. The natural green-gold color of the coin has taken on a slight overlay of reddish patina and only in the most exposed areas of the fields shows minor abrasions and scuff marks. Despite its relatively modest Mint State rating, a very appealing example of this elusive early five. Population: 2 in 61, 4 finer (12/98).
