Description

Very Rare 1831 Half Eagle
Small 5D, BD-1, XF Details

1831 $5 --Scratched, Improperly Cleaned-NCS. XF Details. Small 5D, Breen-6493, BD-1, High R.6. Perhaps no series in numismatics is more difficult than the Capped Head Left half eagle. The 1813, 1818, and 1820 are available in numbers sufficient to satisfy type demand, but the remainder of the dates range from rare to non-collectible. The 1831 can be acquired with great patience, unlike the 1822 (three known), 1825/4 (two known), 1828/7 (five known), and 1832 12 Stars (five known). This example is subdued by a chemical cleaning, and a few brief pinscratches are noted beneath the right (facing) wing. The upper left obverse field has a pair of strike-throughs, and the obverse rim near 4:30 is slightly uneven. Numismatists should not look the present opportunity, since a year or two may pass before another example reaches the marketplace.(Registry values: P6)
