Description

1833 Capped Head Left Half Eagle, VF25
Large Date, BD-1 Variety

1833 $5 Large Date, BD-1, High R.5, VF25 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/c. A substantial mintage of 193,630 Capped Head Left half eagles was accomplished in 1833, with three die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the BD-1 variety, with widely spaced large numerals in the date. The BD-1 variety is quite scarce, with a surviving population of 35-45 examples in all grades. This was the only use of the obverse die, but the reverse had been used previously to strike both varieties of the 1832 half eagle. The reverse die shows evidence of lapping, with a resulting lack of detail in many areas. This impressive VF25 example shows moderate, even wear on the design elements, with all major devices still complete in outline and much interior detail still intact. The pleasing antique-gold surfaces show the expected number of scattered minor abrasions for the grade.
