Description

1833 Half Eagle, AU Details
Wide Large Date Variety, BD-1
Rare Late Die State

1833 $5 Large Date -- Improperly Cleaned -- NGC Details. AU. BD-1, High R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/c. Formerly in an AU58 SEGS holder, this rare half eagle returned from NGC with the Improperly Cleaned designation. It is the BD-1 variety, notable as the Wide Large Date variant with an estimated survival of just 35 to 45 pieces. Although somewhat more common than the Close Small Date varieties, this rarity is missing from many advanced collections.

Green-gold surfaces are attractive but show light porosity. Several areas of die rust exist on the reverse, but overall the surfaces are pleasing and virtually unabraded. A full strike shows no peripheral weakness as sometimes seen, and the portrait is smooth and bold with just minor pinprick marks. We have sold only five examples in the past 15 years. The Bass-Dannreuther reference states the ANS example is the only Late Die State obverse "b" known, but this coin displays the same diagnostic obverse die crack, as do two others we have seen.
