1834 With Motto Capped Bust Half Eagle
BD-2, Crosslet 4, AU Details
1834 $5 With Motto, Crosslet 4, BD-2, R.5 -- Improperly Cleaned
-- NGC Details. AU. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. In regards
to the Small Size Capped Bust half eagles of 1829 to 1834,
collectors usually cannot afford to be extremely choosy in
selecting an example for their cabinets. Finding a representative
of a certain date or variety in any condition is difficult, and in
some cases, finding a problem-free coin that doesn't break the bank
is almost impossible.Three head dies and three tail dies were employed for the 1834 Capped Bust half eagle, producing four individual varieties. BD-1 and BD-2 are the only ones that are at all collectible, yet, with only 30 to 40 and 45 to 55 examples believed extant, respectively, even these will prove extremely challenging to locate. This BD-2 representative shows bold detail, with a few hints of luster remaining in the protected regions. Pale olive-gold patina is the product of light cleaning, although the surfaces are pleasantly smooth.
