    1834 With Motto Half Eagle, XF45
    Rare BD-2 Die Marriage
    Crosslet 4 Obverse

    1834 $5 With Motto, Crosslet 4, BD-2, R.5, XF45 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b. BD-2 is one of the two collectible 1834 half eagle varieties, although both are in and of themselves rare. The other, BD-1, represents the Plain 4 logotype, making BD-2 the only Crosslet 4 variety that is usually obtainable. The other two varieties for this issue are prohibitively rare (BD-3) and unique (BD-4). Perhaps 45 to 55 examples of BD-2 are extant, with many having been cleaned or otherwise damaged.

    This Choice XF BD-2 example is evenly struck and well-centered, showing the reverse rotated slightly clockwise. Wear is light, and medium green-gold patina is seen on each side in place of original mint luster. A few minor contact marks do not detract, and the eye appeal is quite pleasing for the issue.
