    Description

1804 Capped Bust Right Five, MS64
Small 8 Guide Book Variety, BD-1

1804 $5 Small 8, BD-1, High R.4, MS64 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State b/b, with a die crack through 0 in the date and a retained cud above T in UNITED. A substantial mintage of 30,475 Capped Bust Right half eagles was accomplished in 1804, with seven die varieties known for the date. This coin represents the scarce BD-1 variety, with a Small 8 (John Dannreuther notes it is really a Normal 8) in the date and a graver's line from the point of the shield to the eagle's beak on the reverse. The BD-1 has a surviving population of 70-90 examples in all grades. This was the only use of the reverse die, but the obverse was used again to strike the BD-2 variety of this date.

The present coin is a spectacular Choice example, with sharply detailed design elements and a few planchet adjustment marks on the bust. The pleasing antique-gold surfaces retain much original mint luster and show only minor signs of contact. Eye appeal is outstanding. Housed in an NGC holder commemorating the Guide Book signed by Ken Bressett. Census: 9 in 64 (1 in 64+), 0 finer (10/19). (Variety PCGS# 519891, Base PCGS# 8085)
