Description

1804 Half Eagle, CAC-Approved MS62
BD-5, Small Over Large 8
A Rare Die Variety

1804 $5 Small Over Large 8, BD-5, High R.6, MS62 PCGS. CAC. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/k, as always. A bisecting die crack from the tip of the eagle's left (facing) wing through the shield to the E in AMERICA led to the retirement of this workhorse reverse die, which was employed for a total of six die marriages in 1803 and 1804. This dramatic Repunched Date obverse is seen here in the first of three uses, currently in a perfect die state.

BD-5 is a major rarity among 1804 half eagle varieties. Only 15 to 18 pieces are believed extant, one of which is housed in the Bass Core Collection. Harry W. Bass, Jr. at one point owned two examples of the variety, including the former Norweb coin. We last handled a BD-5 example in the FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2013), lot 7085 -- the coin was graded AU55 PCGS and garnered $11,750. This piece is Mint State and lustrous. Both sides are razor-sharp throughout the border stars, central devices, and the stars above the eagle's head. Yellow-gold surfaces yield scattered abrasions, including a couple of prominent marks in the obverse field below the TY in LIBERTY. CAC-endorsed and an appealing example of this rare die variety.
