    Description

    1811 Half Eagle, MS64
    Small 5, BD-2, None Finer

1811 $5 Small 5, BD-2, R.3, MS64 PCGS. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/a, without clash marks on reverse. However, a faint crack between stars 9 and 10 suggest an intermediate die state. With only two varieties for the year, the 1811 BD-2, Small 5 half eagle is easily distinguished from its BD-1, Tall 5 counterpart, though both were struck from the same obverse die. According to John Dannreuther, about 225 to 300 examples of the 1811 Small 5 are known. None are graded higher than this lustrous near-Gem.

Brightly frosted yellow-gold surfaces showcase bold detail on the obverse and a softer strike on the reverse. Roller marks appear on that side, especially through TE in STATES and IBU in PLURIBUS. A few adjustment marks also occur around the rims, but none of these affect the grade or appeal. This early half eagle is a prize. Population (for the Small 5 variant): 22 in 64 (3 in 64+), 0 finer (6/19).
