1825/4/1 Half Eagle, BD-1, AU Details
    Rare Overdate

1825/1 $5 -- Reverse Repaired, Improperly Cleaned -- NCS. AU Details. BD-1, High R.5. Bass-Dannreuther Die State a/a. As a date, the 1825 half eagle is among the rarest and most intriguing early United States gold issues. Three varieties compose the surviving population, all overdates; BD-1 comprises the majority, with 25 to 30 examples believed known, while BD-2 is represented by just two coins; the recently discovered BD-3 variety features a different reverse than the former two, and is represented by a single specimen. Sometimes certified as 1825/1, the BD-1 variety is rather thought to be an 1825/Partial 4, and is more recently called an 1825/4/1.

The reverse fields of this example exhibit moderate brushing, likely to remove abrasions and/or clash marks. The bold design details are unaffected, however, and both sides displays pleasing visual appeal, despite old, light cleaning. A still-pleasing example of this highly sought-after rarity.(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# BFY6, PCGS# 8133)
