Description
1812 Half Eagle, MS61
Wide 5D, BD-1
1812 $5 Wide 5D, BD-1, R.3, MS61 NGC. Bass-Dannreuther Die
State a/a. The 1812 provides two die pairs, known to collectors as
the Wide 5D variety (BD-1) and the Narrow 5D variety (BD-2). The
Guide Book does not note the distinction, although Breen
(1988) designated a separate number for each. BD-1 is more
available, but any 1812 half eagle is challenging to acquire in
Mint State. The present example shows ample caramel-gold luster.
The strike is typical on the eagle, though the remainder of the
coin is fairly sharp. The fields display distributed pinpoint
marks.Coin Index Numbers: (NGC ID# 25PL, Variety PCGS# 507601, Base PCGS# 8112, Greysheet# 393244)
