    Part of Proof Set

1857 $1 Seated Dollar PR65 NGC. The Seated dollar is the crown-sized coin in this wonderful proof set and the capstone of the year, with an unknown mintage. Estimates are at least 50 pieces and range upward to 100 proofs. What is telling are the number (or lack thereof) of high-grade examples. In Gem only three others have been certified by NGC with 12 finer (surely quite a few duplicates are contained in that number). The hazy blue surfaces show an underlying reddish tint, and the mirrored flash is partially subdued, but when angled just so beneath a light the proof finish flashes forth. Sharply struck throughout with no obvious contact marks.
