    1898 Six-Piece Proof Set, PR63-PR67
    All PCGS-Certified

1898 1C Six-Piece Proof Set, PCGS-Certified. This is a lovely, well-matched proof set. Included are:

Cent PR65 Red and Brown. Much original orange-red color remains, especially around the margins. The central portions of each side are muted olive with some red showing beneath. Pinpoint strike definition.

Nickel PR64 Cameo. The contrast is remarkable and immediately apparent on this piece. While the obverse is brilliant, the reverse has a thin layer of milky-reddish patina in the center. Fully struck.

Dime PR65 Cameo. Like the nickel above, the contrast is immediate and in this case startling. The centers on each side are brilliant with a thin ring of russet patina at the margins. Fully defined in all areas. This is a lovely coin that looks finer than the stated grade.

Quarter PR66+ Deep Cameo. As proof type collectors are well aware, the 1898 quarters and halves are among the finest brilliant proofs produced in the Mint (perhaps second only to the 1896). This quarter is deeply mirrored with snow-white, frosted devices. Generally brilliant, the obverse is encircled with light russet patina, while the reverse has muted reddish-gray toning in the center.

Half Dollar PR63. Most of the other coins in this set are Cameo. This one displays moderate contrast, but it is unacknowledged on the insert. Lightly hairlined, each side is mostly brilliant with a faint accent of peripheral golden-brown toning.

Dollar PR67 Deep Cameo. Astonishing white-on-black contrast is seen on each side. Like several of the other coins in this set, the faces of each side are brilliant except for a thin ring of golden-brown peripheral color. As one might expect from the grade, the surfaces are nearly perfect.
