1913 Original Six-Piece Proof Set
PCGS-Certified PR65 to PR67
In Old Green Label Holders

1913 1C-50C Six-Piece Original Proof Set, PR65-PR67 Red PCGS. This 1913 group was one of several original proof sets in the 1992 Superior sale. It was offered first as individual lots, then reoffered immediately after as a group lot to allow a higher bidder to keep the coins together. And so they remain today. We offer them here as a single lot, preserving this original sets legacy. Each piece is housed in a Generation 3.0 green label PCGS holder; the cent and two nickels have sequential certification numbers, as do the dime through half dollar. The individual coins are as follows:

Cent PR67 Red. As superb of a matte proof Lincoln as there ever was, showing razor-sharp definition and luminous fields. The dominant color is copper-orange and red, which is vivid, but with added threads of mint-green, silver, gold, and amber-red running through the margins. A couple minute specks on the reverse confirm the Century Collection plate match. To this day, PCGS reports only seven 1913 proof cents in PR67 Red, one of which is Plus designated, with none finer (11/25).

Nickel -- Type One -- PR67. A coin as superb as the cent, though yielding its own palette of champagne iridescence. The devices are fully struck, the luster luminous, the coin devoid of imperfections. This is easily a perfect proof type coin.

Nickel -- Type Two -- PR66. Lovely champagne margins frame brilliant interiors on this exemplary Premium Gem proof. Every intricate detail is fully struck, and the eye appeal is outstanding.

Dime PR65. The dime introduces us to the old-time proof set toning that will be a familiar sight on the higher denomination pieces. Glimmering fields and sharp, softly frosted motifs yield autumn-gold and russet hues across surfaces that seem almost too beautiful for even the Gem grade.

Quarter PR66. The quarter yields mirrored fields and sharp definition akin to those of the dime, along with a healthy array of similar colors. However, on the obverse, lovely blue and red prevail in the right field.

Half Dollar PR66. The half dollar is easily the most beautifully toned piece in the set, yielding mirrored fields and sharp definition amid rich sunset-amber and golden hues. On the obverse pastel lilac and blue over the portrait create an ideal harmony of colors that give this coin eye appeal nearly unheard of today.

Ex: The Century Collection (Superior, 2/1992), as individual lots 2097-2102, then as a group in lot 2103.
