Gorgeous Ten-Piece 1878 Proof Set, Gem Quality

Complete 1878 Proof Set, cent through silver dollar. Included are:

1878 Cent PR 65 Red PCGS. The champagne-red surfaces reveal modest reflectivity in the fields at certain angles. A crisply struck, expertly preserved Gem.

1878 Three Cent Nickel PR 65 PCGS. Untoned and fresh, the snappy surfaces are free of even the most trivial abrasion.

1878 Nickel PR 65 PCGS. Moderately reflective beneath dusky-gold iridescence, both sides reveal the razor sharp definition that collectors have come to expect from proof production methods.

1878 Dime PR 65 PCGS. This is a wonderfully original example with thick cobalt-charcoal toning on the reverse and lighter, mottled shades of crimson-russet color over the obverse. Typically smooth for the grade.

1878 Twenty Cent Piece PR 66 PCGS. The final year of this short-lived denomination, this proof-only issue is always in demand among advanced collectors. This beautifully toned survivor reveals glassy fields beneath charcoal-russet toning. Brighter apricot, golden, and blue undertones are evident at certain angles.

1878 Quarter PR 65 PCGS. Olive-russet and lavender-gray shades compete for dominance on the obverse of this impeccably preserved proof. The reverse displays a more even endowment of lavender-gray toning with scintillating electric-blue undertones.

1878 Half PR 65 PCGS. Both sides of this deep, watery example are awash in dappled crimson-apricot and olive-russet shades. A lovely coin for the collector who values originality as well as technical quality.

1878 Trade Dollar PR 65 NGC. Brilliant on the reverse and nearly so on the obverse, both sides are equally free of hairlines and contact marks. The sharply struck, thinly frosted devices float atop the unfathomably deep fields.

1878 8TF Dollar PR 66 NGC. Bright and radiant in the centers, the peripheral areas are delicately toned in champagne-russet shades. This powerfully impressed Gem is an important representative of this popular one-year type.

1878 7TF Reverse of 1878 Dollar PR 65 PCGS. Deeply, yet attractively toned, the olive-charcoal coloration on the obverse contrasts nicely with the smoky-lavender shades over the reverse. The proof qualities, as well as brighter undertones, shine forth as the coin rotates beneath a light.
