Early Die State 1796 BD-2 No Stars Quarter Eagle

1796 $2 1/2 No Stars--Obverse Repaired, Improperly Cleaned--NCS. XF Details. Breen-1, Breen-6113, Bass-3002, BD-2, High R.4. Two months ago, a new reference on varieties of early gold coins made its appearance at the ANA Convention in Denver. The principal author is John W. Dannreuther (known to his friends as JD), with the late Harry W. Bass, Jr. as co-author. Dannreuther made extensive use of the notes compiled by Bass over his 30 years in the gold coin hobby. For collectors of early gold coinage, numismatic scholars, and professional numismatists, this work is indispensable. Every known die variety is illustrated with exceptional color photographs, and die state information is extensive. Each variety is identified by a Bass-Dannreuther number, in the case of this coin it is BD-2, and we will endeavor to use these in the future. Estimated current populations and rarity ratings are also provided for each die marriage. Perhaps the only omission in this reference is Condition Census data; however, such data is outdated nearly as quickly as it is compiled.
Light yellow-gold surfaces have hints of green color and faint splashes of orange patina. The obverse has been extensively tooled in the fields to diminish the effect of unidentified earlier problems. This example is from an early die state, with the lower hair curls essentially complete. There is no evidence that the obverse die has been lapped. Dannreuther noted: "most are seen with the curls weakened by lapping, some examples with this feature very much in evidence."(Registry values: P10) (NGC ID# 25F2, PCGS# 7645)
