Description

1796 No Stars Two and a Half
VF Details, BD-2, Key Early Type

1796 $2 1/2 No Stars on Obverse, BD-2, R.4 -- Damaged, Plugged -- NCS. VF Details. Bass-Dannreuther Die State d/b with a lapped shoulder curl. Every early gold type collector knows that the 1796 No Stars quarter eagle, and the 1808 quarter eagle, are the two rarest gold types. Both were struck for only one year, and are highly elusive relative to voracious demand. This caramel-gold circulated example is plugged near 12 o'clock. The IBER in LIBERTY are crudely re-engraved, as are the eagle's tail and nearby dentils. A fold in Liberty's cap is also re-engraved. The aforementioned problems allow a collector on a budget to acquire this otherwise unaffordable rarity.
