Description
1796 No Stars VF 20 Cleaned. The 1796 is one of the few transcendent rarities in U.S. coinage that is well known outside the circle of gold specialists. It has a distinctive design unlike any subsequent quarter eagle (which all have stars), it is the first date of the denomination, and it is the first coin struck with sixteen reverse stars honoring Tennessee's admission to the Union. Even in VF 20 grade it is an important coin and this piece will no doubt be eagerly bid upon by a wide variety of collectors and dealers.
The surfaces show evidence of having been cleaned at one time, but otherwise are quite unaffected by post-striking impairments considering the open fields on the obverse. There is one small area of contact in the left obverse field, and on the reverse there is a diagonal cut across the horizontal shield lines--these two features should greatly aid anyone wishing to trace the pedigree of this important coin. The golden-orange color overall is accented by a light reddish patina surrounding the devices.
