    Description

1796 No Stars AU 58 NGC. The 1796 No Stars, one of only 963 pieces minted, is one of the few transcendent rarities in U.S. coinage that is well known outside the circle of gold specialists. It is a one-year type coin that has a distinctive design unlike any subsequent quarter eagle (which all have stars), it is the first date of the denomination, it is the first issue to ever showcase a heraldic eagle on the reverse, and it is the first coin struck with sixteen reverse stars honoring Tennessee's admission to the Union.
This piece represents excellent value in this rare type. Just the slightest bit of friction can be seen in the fields from brief handling, which has disturbed some of the mint luster but significant amounts still remain, especially around the devices on the reverse. Well struck in general, the only area of softness on the reverse at the juncture of the eagle's breast and the top of the shield. Extraordinarily clean, the only abrasions of note (and they are very small) are in front of the forehead of Liberty and a few contact marks in the lower right field. A light reddish patina accents the perimeter of each side. A rare opportunity to acquire this important U.S. type coin in near-mint condition. (NGC ID# 25F2, PCGS# 7645)
