Very Rare Near-Mint 1796 Quarter Eagle

1796 $2 1/2 No Stars AU 58 PCGS. The No Stars 1796 quarter eagle is one of the few truly transcendent rarities in U.S. coinage. Only 963 pieces were struck, but its desirability is not dependent upon its rarity per se, but rather upon its status as a one-year type. This is the only year quarter eagles were produced without stars around the obverse. Upon reflection, one wonders why the peripheral stars were necessary from an artistic standpoint. The No Stars design has a much cleaner, medal-like appearance with the central device of Liberty set in tondo, the single word LIBERTY above, and the date below. Close examination (a glass is necessary) reveals a few shallow adjustment marks in the center of each side. The centers are also somewhat softly struck, as usual. The fields are bright and show a slight semi-reflective sheen, a quality that seems to be common to the few high grade No Star 1796s we have seen over the years (probably from the use of new dies). There are only two identifying marks and both are located in the obverse fields: the first is a shallow vertical scratch to the left of Liberty's haircurls, the other is an angling pair of shallow pinscratches to the right of Liberty's neck. Just the slightest friction is noted over the highpoints of the design and in the fields. An extraordinary 1796 quarter eagle.
