    Description

NGC 1796 Stars AU 50. Only 432 pieces were struck of the Stars type and estimates of survivors range from as few as 20 to 25 coins (Akers) to a high of 30 (Breen). Virtually all are in the VF-XF grade range, most show central striking weakness, and adjustment marks are prevalent. This piece shows some softness in the centers with the neck of the eagle and upper breast feathers weak, but on the obverse the hair is only softly defined behind the ear. The surfaces are a bright yellow-gold, there are a few crisscrossing hairlines in the center of the shield on the reverse, and some remnants of the original prooflike finish can still be seen. There are really no single marks one might consider distracting, just a few tiny ticks scattered about. Overall this is a nice, high grade example of this very rare early quarter eagle, and the first we have handled since the Mandigo specimen in last year's ANA Sale. (NGC ID# BFVN, PCGS# 7647)
