Description

Rare Mint State Five Berries 1798 Quarter Eagle

1798 MS 60 NGC. Five Berries. Once considered the scarcer of the two varieties for this very difficult date, but since the 1970s the majority of 1798 quarter eagles that have surfaced have been from this die pairing. A total of 1,094 pieces were reported to have been struck. However, a delivery of 480 coins was made in December of 1799 and it is currently thought that this shipment included the 1798 Five Berries pieces, as there are no coins of this denomination dated 1799 or 1800.
The green-gold surfaces show a mild prooflike reflectivity with a slight accent of reddish-coppery patina. Each side has numerous small abrasions and mint-made laminations. The most obvious ones are in the right obverse field out from the nose of Liberty, and on the reverse there are a couple of scratches across the eagle's neck. Exceptional quality for this scarce type and seldom seen finer. Population: 1 in 60, only 2 finer (10/97).
